Guildford – New Build Garden

About This Project

A large terrace and raised beds

The new build modern bungalow owners planned to rent the property out, therefore they required simple and easy to maintain landscaping and planting. The south-facing garden was slightly sloped and partly overshadowed by a tall leylandii hedge, belonging to neighbouring property.

The shade contributed to the garden at the back of the house being quite wet and unusable for a significant part of the year. Also, although the garden was large, the house was situated quite close to the rear boundary, with most of the garden located to the side.

To remedy the problems, we created a large terrace at an angle to the bungalow to lead the eye away from the fence and towards the side garden. The new terrace provided ample and dry space for dining, sitting and entertaining. It was laid with grey concrete slabs by Schellevis to complement the modern architecture of the house.

In addition, we added two raised beds at the edge of the terrace (that raises more than half a metre above ground level at the end) to serve as focal points and protection from accidental falls.

At the front of the property, we designed a gravel drive with paving near the house matching the rear paving. This allowed step-free access to the house and back garden. The flower bed echoes the design at the rear and adds interest. The planting is kept simple and easy to maintain.
